Not so great 3.31.9

No real hands developed at Foxwoods WPT event. Unfortunately I was eliminated within the first couple levels. It was a disappointing part of my day off. Better luck next year I suppose.

Do not be alarmed 3.27.9

The loud noise you heard last night was my bracket explosion. Well, unless you were near the California test site with Mythbusters and the broken windows. The blast was caused by some ammonium nitrate, trying to blow the socks off. My guess is that no socks remain to test, if they had the dummy on the pile of explosives.

My national champion Memphis lost to Missouri. I did have the other games correct. Uconn over Purdue, 'Nova over Duke, and Pitt over Xavier. I guess my best guess this year will need better luck next year. No idea for this year, but 'Nova has looked like a team capable of winning it all. Not sure how many of the 1 seeds make it, but if Pitt plays like it did theywill not make the championship game.

Yeah, I guess that rumors in High School is one thing, but to make headlines in the online paper? Really? What is this the Onion? Everyone knows that vampires hang out in old castles and basements, not high schools. Makes you wonder what they are teaching kids these days.

Lincoln Letter 3.26.9

Letter to his son's teacher.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S LETTER
TO HIS SON'S TEACHER

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just
all men are not true.

But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician
there is a dedicated leader...

Teach him for every enemy there is
a friend
It will take time, I know;
but teach him if you can
that a dollar earned is of far more value than five found...

Teach him to learn to lose...
and also to enjoy winning.

Steer him away from envy
if you can
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.

Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick...

Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books...
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky
bees in the sun
and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat...

Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong...

Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people
and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on
the band wagon...

Teach him to listen to all men...
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth
and take only the good
that comes through.

Teach him if u can
how to laugh when he is sad...
Teach him there is no shame in tears

Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness...

Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he's right.

Treat him gently
but do not cuddle him
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.

Let him have the courage
to be impatient...
let him have the patience to be brave.

Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order
but see what you can do...
He is such a fine fellow
my son!

Marquette finished 3.24.9

Sometimes life is just one big tease. Sure the game ended with a fluke step over the inbound line with a little over five seconds, but the way the team competed in making it close was just agonizing. I didn't know what to expect for the NCAA tournament. I was considering getting West regional final tickets and airfare knowing the seed, matchups, location and planning a last second escape from the Boston cold, to sunny Arizona. Not to be. Not next year since this was a one in a million chances. Hopefully I can look back at these games and learn that I can do little besides dream big and hope for another magical run sometime soon.

Recap Day One 3.20.9

First day of Spring.....and the brackets are already toast. Hat tip to Jon for having a perfect bracket. What does day 2 hold in store? Hopefully a little more upsets. I had most of the 12's and couple of 13's but in the end, the higher seeds won most of the games. Sorry Anne Marie, I thought VCU playing in Philly would be enough to overcome the travel weary UCLA team.

Back one month later 3.13.9

I'm not afraid of today, but I'm sure some people have that fear.

6 OT game in the Big East quarter finals? Yeah, good luck having anything left for the next 2 games against ranked teams. Syracuse was robbed at the buzzer to end the game IMO, but the refs ruled no basket. Must be the Buffalo Wings commercial brought to life.

MU vs. Villanova 3.12.9

That last sequence sucked. Jerel McNeal....sure he is a great player. Hands down dominant at times....others you just go and want to pull him out of the game and bench him for the poor play, shot selection, turnovers, defense mistakes....well you get the point. Not sure it is entirely his fault, but Buzz Williams has to take the blame for the loss at some point. No timeouts? Up 1? 4-5 second difference in the shot clock? Says wait for Villanova to commit with under 5 to shoot and then hope you can draw a foul. Take one of our own time outs to set something up? Why not? Not hoping for a good seed anymore because I give up.

More Big East 3.12.9

What looked like a Big Ten score, it sure was nice that Marquette took out St. Johns yesterday. Building a huge lead in the first half, and then coasting in the second, they set the record for fewest points in a half with 10.

Another loss on the road 3.5.9

Another loss to a highly ranked team on the road. Sure a 23-5 run to start the second half built a 9 point lead, however this team is WAY too good to let that rattle them. A couple of questionable calls again changes the course of the game. Hardly anyone in foul trouble for Pitt, but Blair/Young/Fields are the best of the BEAST. Hopefully the Syracuse game will give them a little confidence before the tournaments. The only consolation was beating the Pitt fans in Stump Trivia. Finishing in third overall by only a few points. The pictorial questions were the toughest and failure to act on the correct answer for the most points for the half time actress. Not bad considering the amount of $5 pitchers consumed.

White March 3.2.9

Yes a another loss. This time to a poor shooting Louisville team in Freedom Hall. Sure plenty of lost opportunities we failed to take. 4 point losses suck, but not having McNeal anywhere near a decent shooting game really lost it for us. Not sure if the coach could afford to sit him for a brief period to help him understand you need to do something different in order for our team to win. Not to just take wild shots. Not a chance agains Pitt.

Only 15 inches of new snow once the old had FINALLY melted and cleared. Now we dig out.
