MU Season in a shell 3.4.14

I can't believe i stuck through the two overtimes. Talk about a micro-cosim of the entire season. I still can't believe a player like Jake Thomas some how deserves playing time. The guy has so little D-1 talent, it is a joke to have him playing and being a key role. For the life of me, I don't forget how terrible the teams were when I attended, but this is a travesty to the rest of the Alumni. Get. Him. Off. The. Court.

Miserable 2OT loss at Providence. Gut punch, but it was expected since they gave up so much at 41-41 in regulation.

Tim McCarver 10.27.11

Funny 18 straight batters to "not hit out of the infield", misses the lead off Home Run in the Cardinals order by Craig. Buck disinterest in calling Home Runs along with obvious misses in the game has me wishing FOX wouldn't put this due on the MLB World Series.

Beware of today. Sure the Ides are come, but everyone is concerned in how to pick the NCAA brackets. How many 1 seeds? Any 5/12 upsets? Conference loyalty? TV schedule, announcers, regional information.

Recap 3.12.10

Not the way to start the Semifinals of the Big East tourney. Sure, spotting Georgetown a 7-0 run results in a time out. This induced flash backs to Mike Deane, who could not resist using time outs less than a minute into the game. Good effort to fight back at the half. Not so much defense and a clearly overmatched team led to the second half blow out. Most likely an 8 seed somewhere, possible 7 due to better teams and conflict resolution. Does Spokane, San Jose seem possible again? Oklahoma City?

As for the new Packers alternate jersey...I don't think they are going to sell as many as the marketing department would anticipate. Surely Green Bay is a supportive town and the classic look from the first world championship team of 1929 is a vast change, but I like the 1950's style more. Introduce the change and then postpone the sale? Not smart.

Making money on the underdogs 2.10.10

Who would have thought that the Saints of all teams would end up winning Super Bowl 44? Certainly not me. I would have given the 7 figuring Manning is too good of a leader to let his team down. Granted New Orleans was flat the first half, but boy did they turn it around with some gutsy calls to start the second half. Which, was a good thing since my square was moved on the last second FG and then back on again for the third quarter. Too bad the poker game didn't go as well giving the money back to the house.

Snow up and down the East coast but very little in the mountains. Too bad since I would have liked to have gone snowboarding again.

Looking for vacation time for 10 days straight since the dumbest corporate policy known to man is in effect and has little chance of being overlooked.

Doing laundry down the hill sucks. Especially during the winter time. Having a car would be easier but not worth the hassle of parking.

Completion date for the renovations is most likely sometime in June or July. December 18, 2009? Anyone? ......

Awesome trips down to watch the Marquette games in Providence and Hartford. A train and bus trip were decent, but even better with a couple of Trinity brew Growlers.

Pats Luck 9.14.9

You don't see that often in the NFL. Buffalo, with the two scores lead, with around 2 minutes to play decides to run out the deep kickoff. THEN FUMBLE at their own 33 to set up the Pats for the victory and game changing TD with 50 seconds left. No, nothing to see here in the 25-24 come from behind nail biter in the MNF opener.

As for the Mohegan Sun.... UNBELIEVABLE bad luck. KK lose to AA when the guy has AA in back to back hands? Go figure. A8 on an 883 flop to have 9/8 turn a 9? Yeah, time to walk away. Not one big win in 4 hours. Terrible.

MU vs. Villanova 3.12.9

That last sequence sucked. Jerel McNeal....sure he is a great player. Hands down dominant at times....others you just go and want to pull him out of the game and bench him for the poor play, shot selection, turnovers, defense mistakes....well you get the point. Not sure it is entirely his fault, but Buzz Williams has to take the blame for the loss at some point. No timeouts? Up 1? 4-5 second difference in the shot clock? Says wait for Villanova to commit with under 5 to shoot and then hope you can draw a foul. Take one of our own time outs to set something up? Why not? Not hoping for a good seed anymore because I give up.

February 25, 2009

ESPN 7 PM 2.25.9

Huge game tonight on ESPN. Marquette hosts UConn. Not only will Uconn be trying for win 800, but with Pitt losing to Providence it has a chance to step back up to the the #1 ranking it lost last week. Not sure any team wants to be ranked #1 in college hoops since it is a big bulls eye/target for the rest of the conference to take aim and secure a "quality win". Hopefully the SOLD OUT Bradley Center will be rocking and give the team a lift. I wish I was able to attend this game.

As for the Panthers/Bruins game last night, it sure does pay to get to your seat early since the first goal was 30 seconds into the game. It was still cool to see 6 others. Great seats that I wish we were able to get again. I was in Las Vegas for the quality Montreal game so I was 1/2 in the games won/attended. Too bad the Wild won in one of the more boring NHL games.

Weekend recap 1.19.9

I still can't figure out how the Arizona Cardinals made it to the Super Bowl. Congratulations I guess, but they are not the best team in the NFC this year. I would say the same thing about the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC, but getting past a brutal Baltimore Ravens team for the third time is saying something.

As for the Marquette/Providence game at the Dunkin Donuts center it sure wasn't pretty. I will take a road win the Big East any time, but the way they looked it should have been a double digit LOSS. Sure they came back from being down 13 or so to win by 9, but they need to play a better first half. The fan or brother of the player that came onto the court should have been show the door A LOT sooner than getting in the face of the ref for the correct non call. Not sure what security was doing in the twenty or seconds it took for someone to say, hmmm....he shouldn't be out on the court.

Wake taking over Duke for the rankings is an oddity. Watching a little more hoops after the non stop great game action over the weekend. Pitt/Syracuse is a good game. Not sure about the Howard or Vermont games.

Packers win opener 9.8.8

A late night at work kept from catching the first half but I caught the more interesting finish. Not sure they worked on everything in the preseason but a win against a division opponent is key. Decent play on the offense and a better defensive pressure than I was expecting. Chicago's surprising win over the Colts at Indy was one of the unexpected results. Along with Carolina over San Diego in the last seconds, Atlanta over Detroit, and Philly bigger than expected.

Injuries seem to have been a bigger story in week 1 than most opening weeks from prior year. Some of the not so surprising teams won, but my fewer points than expected. Proving you never know opening week what might happen.

Foxwoods was a decent trip. It could have been much better had I just played a couple of hands differently. Lesson learned but a costly one. Dave actually did really well following a poor showing the previous day in the 5-10 game. At least one of us was up big. Mark not so much.

Number of Suicides in Boston skyrockets 9.8.8

Opening day for the New England Patriots and the MVP star quarterback goes down with a season ending knee injury in the first quarter. Today, when the news comes he will be lost for the season on IR, you can see the backed up line of people jumping off the John Hancock building and the bodies piling up. Luckily the Boston Police Department has blocked pedistrian traffic so no more fans will be injured from those leaping to their deaths. I think I was the only one in the office that said they should have signed Brett Favre, but as usual no one bothers to listen.

Crean leaves MU 4.1.8

I wish it was an April Fools joke, but sadly the rumors of his departure turned into a media onslaught. I wish him luck as he has helped build the mens team and taken them to about as high as he could in the Big East. Tough to fill those shoes but hopefully the next coach can bring them back to the NCAA final four. What I don't understand is who is expecting to coach since most of the team is gone and will face sanctions from the NCAA.

March 22, 2008

MU Season Over 3.22.8

Terrible ending to the Standford/Marquette game in OT. 9 Seconds left in regulation with 2 timeouts why settle for a tough contested 3 point shot. No interior defense to stop the 7 footers. Without a decent big man, over 6-6 we have no answer. Figures most fans are happy with a one win post season. Not me. I can't believe it is over and most likely any chance of a decent NCAA tournament run.

March 04, 2008

Favre Retirement 3.4.8

Brett Favre announced his retirement today. I came across the JS Online breaking news earlier today while most of the sports sites I visit to catch up on still hadn't picked it up. ESPN has some articles worth checking out. I'm not upset nor shocked by the decision. I do wonder how many games the networks will have with the Packers next season or the cap impact of the decision now rather than say a week ago. I'm sure someone will have that information later in the week. He made it easy to root for the team and was truely a great guy to cheer for. Most fans I pass here in Boston question how I'm a fan but without fail, they ALWAYS, to some degree mention how they "love" Favre. Easy....he had as much fun out there as any one and was a true class act.

March 01, 2008

Bruins game 3.1.8

Went to my first NHL game. Pretty decent seats. OT and shootout help to determine the winner. Bruins over Thrashers.

Tough loss in the Georgetown/Marquette game. I wish I was able to watch but didn't realize that the hockey game and basketball were on at the same time. No matter since it would have been difficult to sit through and watch that ending. Terrible decision late.

No idea about Lost. I think Desmond is really not flashing back to 1996. I think it was a bogus phone with no connection. How does a constant from the past choose Desmond since he could have died some time ago? or the father failed to give his daughter's new address?

February 25, 2008

Resume 2.25.8

Road wins are BIG in conference play. Taking down a hot team on their own court is exactly how you earn higher seeds. The win at Villanova and then another against the Big East leader in Georgetown should set up nicely for the later two FGC and at Syracuse. With the Big East tourney giving byes to the top four nothing is locked up yet but it sure would be nice to get that extra day off.

Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit.

6th Grade English Paper 2.23.8

For a 6th grade English paper assignment, I once wrote a paper about the sports salaries of overpaid players. The contracts they were signing in 1990 or so was something I felt was out of control. Fast forward to 2008 and the NBA trade deadline and here is the Slate article I would say brings me up to date with how out of control things have become.

February 20, 2008

MU recap 2.20.8

30 minutes of decent basketball. 10 minutes of lack of focus. Sure they handled one of the worst/youngest teams in the Big East, at NYC/MSG but if you are in cruise control up 20+ you should be able to hang on and win by at least 10. The body of work late in the season is critical to get a better seed. Don't be surprised if they are seeded 5 or 6 out West with a Tennessee or Memphis as a second game. Worse yet is to be in the South with the Duke/UNC seed playing in Greensboro. You KNOW how well we would NOT do against those two.

Happy Birthday Dad.

Cool lunar eclipse tonight. Freezing cold to watch.

Giants over Pats SB XLII

To think 18-0 matters? Not in this one game. 7-3 after the end of three quarters. 10-7. Then with a drive to make it 14-10 one would think those are types of scores that allow underdogs to build a case for an upset. When it is 8 minutes and driving for the go ahead score, set I think the Pats needed a different bit of play calling when it set up first and goal at the 6 with around 2:45 to go. Pass, incomplete, Pass, incomplete, then Pass touchdown. If you run, run, run. It takes time and allows you to score. With the game still in question and a touchdown, 35 seconds and burning through timeouts, barely making catches, but still allowing a chance, New York outplayed the Patriots tonight and that was the key sequence where they failed to close out this game. Kinda reminds me of the Colts sequence of plays where if they changed just a little bit they would win. Hats off to the defense of getting to Brady most of the time. All of those dropbacks? No running game was going and it was a one dimensional attack. Dink and dunk Pats moving the chains with Welker, but no real reason to think your defense will hold again.

As for the Specter investigation I just wish that guy would die. WTF? Are you that busy with the budget, economy, War, jobs etc. that you need to review a private/league/NFL matter with the threat of "collective bargining"? Well if that is what allows congress to sticks its nose into everything than take it away Mr. Bigshot A Hole. I can't stand politicians and I get more and more sick of them every time they think they know better when the law and job details shouldn't have them involved. Steroids? Ha! Way to screw that up to. Mitchell investigation? Pointless.

Packers games for 2008

The games at Green Bay: AWAY
Chicago Bears Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions Detroit Lions
Minnesota Vikings Minnesota Vikings
Atlanta Falcons New Orleans Saints
Carolina Panthers Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Dallas Cowboys Seattle Seahawks
Houston Texans Jacksonville Jaguars
Indianapolis Colts Tennessee Titans

Pretty good teams if you ask me.

The game against the Giants was not fun to watch. It was tough to get excited after watching Marquette get routed by Uconn but not much I could do. It must have been tough to sit through the cold and get a swift kick from the playoffs in OT after an ill advised throw. The only consolation is that Washington and Oakland fans can only wonder what is going on with their teams.

NFL week 6 recap 10.15.7

Not a bad game by the Packers since "a win is a win." But to put teams away like the Patriots, they must be able to convert first and goal at the 9 and get points. Unable to do so allows the team to come back and win. Luckily a turnover and return for a TD put them ahead for good. How is that not a force out on Bubba Franks or at least a face guarding penalty?

Are the Rams and Dolphins really that bad?

October 08, 2007

MNF Recap

Can't have that many turnovers and missed chances to put a team away and expect to win in the NFL. MUST STOP THE TURNOVERS!. What gives with the illegal formation on defense? 99.999% of the time the refs don't flag that play and if it were New England or the Colts not a chance. Stupid mistakes cost us the chance to put the Bears in the grave. Now they have life support and Green Bay must continue to battle. When it comes to seeding for the playoffs this is "what if...." games that we can't afford to give away.

September 23, 2007

NFL Recap 9.23.7

Another good game for the Packers. Wish I had followed my week one gut reading about the Patriots and the teams they have just torn apart. So much for the pick 'ems at work. Time to rethink my picks. How about Philadelphia picking it up. Donovan should start some race comments every week to get the critics talking.

September 17, 2007

Week 2 Recap 9.17.7

Not as good a week in the pick'ems. Can't win them all I guess. As for the Packers, they took down the New York Giants. A good game to watch up here in Boston. Two weeks in a row on TV. Not sure if next weeks battle with San Diego would make the National coverage again, but it can't hurt having two good teams go at it again.

The Yankees/Sox game was last night. Late getting home and an early shift today has been brutal. Not the greatest seats in Fenway, but fun none the less. Too bad that Schilling lost. I would have liked to see them take 2/3 and put some more room for the division. Hopefully they can close it out and rest up some of the starters.

Week 1 victor

Took the office pool this week. Nice little bonus of "found money". Hopefully a sign of things to come this NFL 07 Season.

NBA Refs 5.2.7

If most of the NBA players are black, the odds are the refs will end up calling more fouls on them no matter the race of the ref. Some paper makes headlines for showing that calls are favoring the few white players. I haven't read it yet, but I'm guessing more black players play the game than white.

NCAA Champions Florida Repeats 4.3.7

A pretty good game last night. I took Florida over Ohio State in a couple of brackets I entered in the office pool. Needless to say I'm happy with the first team to repeat as champs with a little extra money on top of the tax return that came yesterday. The brackets rank in the top 10,000 which is pretty cool and goes to show you that even if you are in the top 99.6%, how many others can claim they are better. I have my work cut out for me come next March.

Wasting time in the Red Sox Virtual Waiting Room 3.29.7

Could the process to purchase tickets get any worse than waiting............and hitting refresh........and waiting........and then trying to read some mysterious set of numbers in a XXXXXX background.....only to wait........and wait some more? Sick bastards.

Done without the one 3.16.7

Not much to say about the Marquette distruction last night. Missed it for an MIT event with some pretty cool speakers. Wish I had caught the VCU-Duke game. Did I know this was going to happen? Yes. Did I have the guts to take the pick in my brackets? No. For shame.

Bracket Sunday 3.11.7

Ready for the Madness. Done with the conference tourneys. Play in games, bubble bursting, selection show, bracketology, etc. Just lace em up and shoot. Not pleased with some of the seedings, but what can you expect. Some teams (Drexel, Syracuse) are out while some are in that maybe a little questionable. I know Thursday around noon US production will take a hit as people take a little longer "lunch" breaks when the first games tip off.

Packers 2007

Quick reminder of the opponents for the Packers next year. Some good home games. Tough places to play. Hopefully I can get some tickets to the Giants game. The last time was the make up game from 9/11.

Back to back wins

Two wins over ranked Big East teams in Uconn on the road Wednesday and today's 81-63 win over West Virginia. Good game to watch on ESPN. At Louisville next. Eagles loss will send the fans into a 12 month funk wondering has the window closed on getting to the NFC playoffs. Colts over Ravens was a snooze fest. Good thing putting up plastic over windows kept us busy.

NBA

Funny you go to a fight and an NBA game breaks out. Funny since I thought the getto, gangsta, rapper, baller image was on it's way out. I guess not. Not that I was a fan to begin with, but has it gone past the point of just give up players actually playing?

Big East Schedule 2006-2007 Opponents

MU's 2006-'07 BIG EAST OPPONENTS: Home-and-Home
Pittsburgh: One of the best teams in the Big East. Shoule be tough both times. We played well last year at Pitt losing in the final minutes. We beat them at the BC, but I wouldn't count on that outcome as a given since the talent they return is much better. Louisville: good to see a Conference USA rival thrown in. Last year DePaul was the Home-Home from CUSA. A much more difficult opponent but we seem to play well both at Louisville and home. Providence: No gimmie here. Close enough for the Boston area Alumni, but it depends on the dates and times.

Home only
Syracuse: I know at least one MU Alumni who is jumping for joy at this game. First time for MU. We missed them last year. Villanova: A return to the BC after we played well at the highly ranked Wildcats. We played well but were just not up to the task to pull off the top ten upset. West Virginia and Rutgers the two losses we could have played much better in. Sure WV had guns blazing from three point land with a record assault. Without a couple of Seniors (Pittsnoggle and Gansey) we'll see how they do. Douby and the snowed out Blizzard of '06 game that packed the 1100 die hards into the RAC are traveling so they can get snowed on Milwaukee style. Seton Hall was a generous win, and hopefully they will continue the poor play and give MU a much needed Big East conference win. No worries against the floundering Pirates even though they appear to be all of the rage now.

Road only
Connecticut: Toughest game in the Big East. We won't see another 49 point outburst from Steve Novak, who by the way was drafted by the Houston Rockets. Nice job Steve. DePaul: We still own them, whether it's in Chicago or Milwaukee, Georgetown: Scrappy, MU like, up and coming, tough nosed, Jesuit, solid team. No gimmie, but another team that steps up in conference play. Notre Dame: One of the toughest luck sub .500 Big East team. The total of the losses was crazy. Hopefully we can pull off another win against our Biggest Rival this side of Cincinnati, USF: Always nice to have at least one conference cupcake in a warm weather destination. We never seem to play well in Florida but seeing how they played last year, you have to put this under the win column.

Will not play
Cincinnati, St. John's. See you guys next year. Cincinnati is in transition with the coach and program and St. John's is a doormat. If you were to pick teams we wouldn't want to play, St. John's is atop my list.

Disappointing Finish

Certainly not the way I would have liked the final between France and Italy to end. WTF was up with the headbut to the dude? PK's to determine who is #1. Not in my opinion. Germany played as well as expected on Saturday. That was a fun game to watch.

The Men's and Women's Wimbeldon finals were alright in their own respect. Nothing much for Nadal against a much better and calmer Federer.

Back in the USA

Flew into the hot, sticky, muggy, rainy weather in Newark today. Back up to Boston tomorrow and re-joining the working stiffs rather than enjoying more of Germany and the World Cup. See you Monday.

Two for Two

Picking the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Champions? Well, if only I had put my money where my mouth is. First Barbaro and then Bernardini. Something about the story of Giacamo Barbarbo winning back to back years on a horses name.

Parking for Red Sox

You would think with the price of tickets for two fans close to $200 that parking would be a little bit cheaper. Think again if you are planning on driving to Fenway. The funny thing is the city thinks it can crack down on high prices? I would bet they can't.

March 18, 2006

And the Madness continues

Yes, I start out with a stunning 15-1 start to the NCAA office pools. Not bad you would think with the lone loss being the 5 points in the game that Marquette gave to Alabama. So after Northwestern LA took out Iowa on a last second shot some early damage was done. Sure I called the Montana, UWM, Texas A&M, NC State, Witicha State games along with the early 8/9 matchups of GW, Arizona, and Bucknell, but nothing prepares you for the struggles of a young but promising Kansas teams. Consider me done with my final four representative from the Oakland bracket done in the first round.

I give up. It's just a game, but I can't take much more of this near perfection that gets destroyed by one team. Now I just need to root for a Gonzaga over BC final in order to reak havoc on the rest of the office pool entrants.

And a Happy St. Patricks day to you.

March 16, 2006

Madness Has begun

Yeah, Seton Hall's exit early was to be expected. Not Marquette's tough loss to Alabama. Sure the SEC went 3-0 and Big East 0-2, with most of the top of the conference to play tomorrow. Not sure what to think of the season until I digest this loss.

Work is a little crazy with people and the brackets busting, but not many shockers. Pacific almost took down BC and Winthrop giving the Vols a scare. Onto the last games of day one of the Madness.

Packers Update

A last game of the season win wasn't enough to have Mike Sherman keep his job. Makes you wonder what they were really thinking by giving him a two year contract extension earlier this year. As for the upcoming list of NFL head coaching changes, Mike Martz, Dom Capers, Mike Tice, Sherman are all unemployed. Soon to take the axe? Detroit, Oakland, maybe the Jets? Stay tuned.

The upcoming opponents for 2006.

Home: Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, Arizona, St. Louis, New England, N.Y. Jets, New Orleans
Away: Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, San Francisco, Seattle, Buffalo, Miami, Philadelphia

Number of playoff teams: 3. Chicago, New England, Seattle. Not a bad set of teams in that group. The Jets, New Orleans, Detroit, San Francicsco, Arizona and St. Louis are teams that could still be bad. Philadelphia, Buffalo, Miami are tougher tests. Minnesota is most likely a changed team without Mike Tice but too early to tell where they will fall. Same with Detroit and changes happening in the city that will host the final game....errr...other than the Pro Bowl.

No idea what Favre will do without Sherman now. His chances of coming back for another go around more than likely will be gone with Sherman.

Poker Rankings

Not quite the top of the list that I was hoping for, but I am the highest ranking player in our house. The results of the Budweiser APL event from a couple of weeks ago are up at the APL site. Still quite a few hundred points away from getting my flight out to Las Vegas.

MU/Rutgers 2/12/06

I got the tickets today for the game in February. Pretty good turn around for the ticket office. Remember the side stakes.

Golden Eagles vs. Scarlette Knights.....I can't wait to storm the court and carry out the baskets...oh, wait that is in football where they act all crazy.

Tip of the day: Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Feeling: Flu like symptoms injected in the left deltoid. Not bad since I don't suffer from a fear of sharp objects or needles, aka Aichmophobia. See the complete list of fears.

GAS Title

Yes we know how Marquette faired last season after getting to a fast start, and I would comment on the games or results. Well, after watching the performance at the GAS (Great Alaskan Shootout), I came away impressed. Yes the first overtime title game went to Marquette rather than South Carolina. The three fresman (James, McNeal, and Matthews) was looking good. Where Novak and Amaroso's career highs came from I have no idea. Crazy defense couldn't contain USC, but the defense really stepped up in key spots.

Unintentional humor about leaving Steve Novak open, "You never want to leave a floater."

New York City Marathon Finish

To lose a 26.2 mile race by less than one stride. Maybe he was late in reacting to the starting gun. Had a one second pause because he was stuck behind a slower running while at the starting line. Put to lose by such a narrow margin in that long of a race is unbelievable. Results here.

In a little bit different news, the Packers have finally won another game. This time in a shocker over the Atlanta Falcons. Yes the 6-2 Falcons were taken down.

Packers Bye Week

Can't have a rooting interest in the games when the Packers are off for this week. The Patriots on the other hand aren't looking too good at Denver.
