Update 6.16.15

OTA's starting in football. Women's World Cup in Canada. First Triple Crown winner in American Pharaoh in 37 years. Golden State leading Cleveland in the NBA Finals. Chicago defeating Tampa Bay in the NHL Stanley cup playoffs. All sorts of interesting changes outside of expectations in the sports world.

UK WI 4.11.2015

Not the title game that most of the country would have expected. Wisconsin took out the NBA caliber talent in the Semi's and Duke took out the lesser skilled team in the final. Some questionable calls towards the end of the game, but the chances to put the game away, up 9 with 6 minutes to play, certainly doomed WI. UNC as the "way too early" 2016 champ. Hopefully the selection committee will send the good teams to Denver and the Pepsi Center.

Happy New Year! 2015 rolls in. Anne's Birthday, Packers home playoff win. So far the year is decent with trips to Copper and new toys. Hopefully the learning, fun, and adventures continue. 2014 on slowdown

Finished a couple of books. Most notably was the Jack Reacher series from Lee Child. Taking up some spy hits and random Supreme Court history. Hopefully this will be a better tracking than using the library past due and renewal settings I was using prior. The World Cup is going on in Brazil. Interesting comments from the USA coach prior to the team breaking camp and the chances of successfully competing with rest of the World. I bought a new mountain and bike and began commuting to work via RTD. It should hopefully get me in a little better shape for the summer. We went out camping and climbing in 11 Mile Canyon. Some cool climbs and scenic drive through new ares of CO. Hopefully this will continue into July.

Yeah, found a job here in Denver. A little different in the corporate world return after an 8 month break. ALPS is the company located downtown. An ok commute on some days, better on others. As for the first leg, it is in my new 2012 Subaru Forester. It is a cool first car. Not too bad considering what I had looked at to begin my car buying experience. Pictures soon. As its first road trip, we went for an Easter weekend to the Great Sand Dunes National preserve. A cool place about 3 hours south of us here. Hunger games was a decent movie. Not sure about the killing for sport, but if the future is about submission, count me out.

Ramblings 10.18.10

How many times has you missed a phone call and you never knew about it? Maybe someone wins an argument, or say a lasting word and it hurts. But what if you’d never heard it? That second chance to alter a path that life will take you. How do you identify the triggers that upset your train of thought? An outcome of life experience and rarely the privilege of the untried may result in something new and unique by changing a small thing in your life. Maybe it was when you decided to stop wearing a watch or take a different route to work/home. How much would you pay to discover the answers?

Return to BAU 8.16.10

Back to work today. The trip out to Yosemite was AWESOME! The return flight on the Red Eye.....not so much. The first day out in San Francisco was to get familiar with the city and see how much you could walk around without taking public transportation. The water front Marina area, AT&T park, The Golden Gate bridge, fresh farmers market, Greens, Lombard Street, Grace Cathedral were parts of the highlights. Fog, driving through downtown, some of the public areas, lack of taxi cabs, the type of hotel, were part of the low lights. Observations from San Fran: Colder than most places even though it is August. A lot of locals are wearking winter clothing, scarves, stocking caps. and panda bears. The Golden Gate bridge is hollow. The "International Orange" is not the true color. Underneath it is Green. Try brushing some of the paint away and it sticks to your hand. Not much on the other side of the bridge once you do cross.

Yosemite is BIG! Really, Really BIG! Half dome is the most challenging hike I've ever done. Hopefully it is the worst I can feel and still survive. Kings and Sequoia everyone must go to in order to appreciate the sheer size of these 3000 year old trees. I would go back and do more trails in each park. Some of the photos from the hike are up.

Over 1200 emails await after being gone for 10 days straight. Off to weed what I need and don't need.

Chase recap 6.29.10

The Chase Corporate challenge results are up. Somehow I missed the video recorders in the crowd, or else I would have given the "Hi MOM!" shout out, but I still found a part in my .01 seconds of recording. As for the race, 29:45 for the 3.5 miles through downtown Boston, which is nearly 6 minutes off my PR for the course. I think I have my first 2011 goal. Find those six minutes and reclaim the fastest runner from JPM. Maybe if I didn't read off every jersey slogan from the other runners my time would have been better, but it wouldn't have been as much fun.

Harvard admissions 5.21.10

Interesting story about the perfect transfer student at Harvard. Adam Wheeler claims he had a list of articles, books, and spoke a variety of languages. I question some of the people in admissions for failing to detect the fraud and don't see how the charges aren't more serious. Given his track record he should write a book and tell future students how to get past the stringent admission office.

Ebert in Esquire 3.5.10

I believe that if, at the end of it all, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. I didn't always know this, and am happy I lived long enough to find it out.

The loud noise you heard last night was my bracket explosion. Well, unless you were near the California test site with Mythbusters and the broken windows. The blast was caused by some ammonium nitrate, trying to blow the socks off. My guess is that no socks remain to test, if they had the dummy on the pile of explosives.

My national champion Memphis lost to Missouri. I did have the other games correct. Uconn over Purdue, 'Nova over Duke, and Pitt over Xavier. I guess my best guess this year will need better luck next year. No idea for this year, but 'Nova has looked like a team capable of winning it all. Not sure how many of the 1 seeds make it, but if Pitt plays like it did theywill not make the championship game.

Heartbreaking 2.26.9

Tough loss last night. Not only the game, but Dominic James. The heart and leader of the team. Sure losing your point guard in the first 4 minutes is tough, but some of the calls by the refs totally changed the game. Four players with four fouls each? Almost every questionable call went against the home team which is difficult to overcome against a hot Uconn team. Anyone want to step out and challenge Price? What looked like a chance for a bye in the Big East and high seed for the NCAA just went down to a 5 seed or worse. It seems we lose a player late in the season every year, but given the lack of depth and no bench players, this is the worst injury yet.

Buzz the new coach 4.8.8

Marquette hires a Crean holdover? I don't think I would want to deal with any of his coaches right about now and start fresh given the opportunity. We'll have to see how many D-1 players this "great recruiter" can get. Chances of getting destroyed in the Big East? "I'm a winner." where you have a sub-.500 record in your one head coaching job? Way to go. Wake me when the BOT make a new decent hire.

Ways to quiet a loud screaming crying baby on the T, play the guess which hand the coin is in. It only costs .1 for the kid to stop crying. Lesson learned: Does this encourage the kid to keep crying and get what he wants or give the rest of the train ride a quiet peaceful ride?

Easter 3.21.8

Home watching the NCAA tourney games. Stopped at Foxwoods to play a little bit of tournaments. Didn't do so well. 10th out of 74 in the Act 2 Super was ok and 30th out of 95 in the 100 tournament was good but I made one bad play and paid dearly for it. Lesson learned.

Marquette beat Kentucky. Glad to watch that game. Hopefully we can make it a game against Stanford. Not sure we match up inside as well.

Marquette F-ugly "basketball" 2.4.8

Apparently the HOME team didn't get the memo that they were supposed to show up at the Bradley center to play a game no ESPN. No luck funding the hustle, tenacity, and scrappy play that makes ESPN pick this game to telecast. What a bunch of pretend players! I can't stand to watch a team not improve or fix the common mistakes that NEED to be corrected from losses.

Plaxico prediction

I guess he was giving too much credit to the offense and not enough to his own defense. It must have gotten to Tom to know he took the bait and thought about it with his own response saying all teams should think they will be giving up more points to the Patriots. Fuel the Giants defense much?

Foxwoods Weekend 12.10.7

A decent weekend at the poker games. I wish I had done better on Saturday so I would be able to get into the deep stack tournament qualifiers. I will take the positive results from the game and consider my luck of good cards along with the Packers and Marquette victories and consider at a great weekend.

Three games left and the Patriots have an easy route to finish 16-0 and lock up a bye for the playoffs. We'll have to see how the NFC shapes up to see if they can stay with 14 points come February.

Town hall meeting at work gives a picture into what we are doing globally and locally to grow the business. Hopefully some interesting news comes later regarding that meeting.

Lifes Reaction Lesson 11.28.7

Your success in life, and in the realm of day-to-day living will depend on how you deal with adversity and problems you encounter. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Be a positive person - remain upbeat and concern yourself with finding a way to succeed instead of focusing on all the reasons you cannot. I wish some people would take this little lesson and repeat it to themselves when they encounter "the little things" that don't quite go their way.

Remember that the true measure of a person is how they treat people who can neither help nor hurt them.

Radio commercial at work describing the down sides of taking a date out for dinner to the grocery store sample sections. Pretty good jokes and commentary. Good advice too.

Thoughts for today 6.1.7

Since a severe thunderstorm has rolled into Boston and rain out the Yankees/Sox game, I'll post some thoughts for the day:

1. Quality The race for quality has no finish line.
2. Opportunity You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
3. Teamwork Teamwork is the ability to work toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.
4. Focus Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you fail to focus on your goals.
5. Determination The race is not always to the swift; but to those who keep on running.
6. Competition Whoever said it's not whether you win or lose that counts, probably lost.
7. Perseverance The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but a matter of will.
8. Success The harder you work ... the luckier you get.
9. Effort Some people dream of worthy accomplishments while others stay awake and do them.
10. Passion There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart ... pursue those.
11. Risk You can't reach your goals without occasionally taking some long shots.
12. Success Some people dream of success ... while others wake up and work hard at it.

Diet tips from the 1500 Century 5.17.7

Leonardo Da Vinci suggests:

If you want to be healthy observe this regime.
Do not eat when you have no appetite, and dine lightly,
Chew well, and whatever you take into you
Should be well-cooked and of simple ingredients
He who takes medicine is ill advised.
Beware anger and avoid stuffy air.
Stay standing a while when you get up from a meal.
Make sure you do not sleep at midday.
Let your wine be mixed with water, take little and often,
Not between meals, not on an empty stomach.
Neither delay nor prolong your visit to the toilet.
If you take exercise, let it not be too strenuous.
Do not lie with your stomach upward and your head
Downward. Be well covered at night,
And rest your head and keep your mind cheerful.
Avoid wantonness and keep to this diet.

When is it okay to hug a new person?

Finished reading Satisfaction about the brain reacations to things people enjoy. Decent read on the chemicals and explanations for tests on the brain.

The best way to become obscenely wealthy is still the old fashioned way in 4 simple steps.

Western World Version

1. Take outrageous risks with extremely high upside.
2. Be the 1 out of 500 million for whom it pans out. This one is key so focus on it.
3. Attribute your wealth creation to your own hard work, your own genius and the power of your business plan. Be sure to stress how your wealth was singularly made possibly by your unique endowment of elbow grease, street smarts, common sense, all of which your competitors obviously lacked (proven by how poor they are compared to you).
4. Buy a mega yacht and/or athletic team.

Russian World Version*

1. Acquire assets illegally either from or with the help of the state. Extra rubles for seizing commodity related assets
2. Kill all your rivals.
3. Buy a mega yacht and/or athletic team.

Lack of experience diminishes our power of taking a comprehensive view of the admitted facts. Hence those who dwell in intimate association with nature and its phenomena are more able to lay down principles such as to admit of a wide and coherent development; while those whom devotion to abstract discussions has rendered unobservant of facts are too ready to dogmatize on the basis of a few observations.

Another Up Trip to Foxwoods 8.28.06

Another good run at the 2-5 NL Texas Hold'em Table. I had some poor plays and bad laydowns in some monster pots but also lucked out on some other monster pots with some good hands. Whatever Mark ate don't ever feed him the same thing again.......just plain wrong.

Weekend update

A good trip to Foxwoods Saturday. Spent about 8 hours cleaning up at the 2-5 No limit. Golf Sunday wasn't as good. It was fun to get out once again. Every 15 years by my count. 147 on the course in tough, wet, rainy, puddled, fairways and greens. If you discount the poor course conditions I would have played much better. Monday was almost another good day at the APL poker game. I made the final three and was in position to win the MVC but made the first, but not the last, mistake of the night. Happy with points but disappointed with none in the second game. We'll see how tomorrow's and Thursday's sessions go.

Poker Home Game 8/3

Played a home game. 16 people for about 4 hours that puts me out on the bubble. Only top three pay and finishing fourth is the worst place to be. No luck in the late, late, late, cash game set up later. On the good news front is the mid year bonus coming on my birthday, but to offset that is the lateness in processing the OT for the past few weeks in my "new" group.

Off to New Jersey for the 10 Year Reunion this weekend. Then Gettysburg and Richmond. I just wonder if the Mass legislature will pass the Tax Free shopping to coincide with my absence again. I missed it the past two years with big purchases. Hopefully the lottery ticket buy-in pool at work will hit and make all the WSOP Acts I, II, III worthless and just buy into the main events.

Advice for Changes

"Having a strong work ethic is very important. You must always do what it takes to get the job done."

"Sometimes you need to be adventurous and take opportunities that may be very different than anything you’ve done before. Take the chance, do the best you can, and learn as much as possible from the experience."

"There are so many good people out there that you need to find a way to stand out from the crowd. Figure out how to differentiate yourself. Pull out of yourself that which makes you unique and different, and use this in everything you do."

"Be responsive when people need your help. Work hard and demonstrate that what you are doing is for the company. When people know that you have the company’s interests at heart, they, in turn, will always be responsive to you."

"Change is the name of the game. Accept it, look for opportunities that may come with it and learn to use it to your benefit."

"Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Plant the seed and let people know that you are ready, willing and able to do other things."

"How you handle yourself in a crisis or when you’ve made a mistake can work to your advantage. If you’ve made a mistake, admit it. But put a plan in place to correct it and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. At the end, you may come out better than you were before."

Tough Questions to ponder

Would you rather:

eat two entire fruit cakes OR drink a gallon of egg nog?
Two fruit cakes. Egg nog is just disgusting.
as a gift, receive a dirty pair of your grandmother's panties OR her used bedpan from the hospital? Used bedpan. At least it just might come back clean.

step in a pile of reindeer poop OR get tangled in a pile of christmas lights?

Pile of christmas lights. Easy to get out of.

give $10,000 to one family that needs it OR $1,000 to 10 families that could really use more?

$1000 to 10 families. No real reason other than the concept of those ten families can spend the cheer or it would seem to go farther than one family getting lucky.

play one of the animals from the broadway musical "lion king" OR play "the phantom" from "phantom of the opera"? Play an animal from the Lion King. Pretty tough choice really, but I think kids will remember the animal more.

find out a complete stranger was watching you change OR accidentally see your elderly neighbor naked? Find out a complete stranger was watching. I don't want to accidentally see anyone in the birthday suit. Plus any added information about the neighborhood is a bonus.

slip on a banana peel and crack your tailbone OR be attacked by a herd of squirrels? Attacked by a herd of squirrels, Seems a folly is bound to happen on the ice here in Boston, but the odds of a squirrel attack without spring time weather is doubtful.

find out your car battery is dead OR wake up to no electricity in your house? Wake up to no electricity. At least AAA doesn't need to come by and help out. The no electricity is a minor problem, but if it does delay your getting things done or into work, then it would be the car since I don't really have one to impact my life.

2005 Recap

Only one month left to accomplish the 2005 Resolutions. A look back and current grades. 1 is poor 10 is great.

1. Save more money. 4. Overall savings/investments are barely up over last years totals. A lot more work and OT are gone. Dividends are not coming in to be spend but re-invested. Some of the unrealized gains are quickly turning into losses. Retirement in the 401k remains at a robust 15% with a company match, so I can't complain there.

2. Find a cool place to live. 3. More costly which eliminates goal #1. The place is alright, a little bit longer of a walk, and slightly up hill. Still hate to move yet again, but it seems more and more likely once the lease is up come August.

3. Travel more. 2. Failed to take off anywhere exciting. No thanks to those who plan the vacation schedule. Almost guaranteed to improve next year. Germany anyone?

4. Get in better shape. 4. If by rounder or larger in the mid-section. This figure better improve for 2006.

5. Run a faster half marathon or a complete marathon. 9. Yes a new personal best was set 10/9/5 at the BAA Half Marathon on a solo effort. Not much training going into the race. After nearly oversleeping, (how is that possible)? All pre-race expectations went out the window. No warmup, rainy, windy, cold weather. Less than ideal, but somehow I pulled it off. No plans for a full marathon so less the 1 point.

6. Figure out what I want to do with the next five years, or set Longer term goals. 4. Still not sure. Check back in 2006. Would have been higher, but the longer term goals need improvements.

7. See a space shuttle launch. Let's go already NASA! 0. NASA shut this one down. Although, June/July would have been as good a time as any, since it seems like it will be difficult getting down to South Florida anytime soon.

8. Volunteer more. 2. Yes Marquette National service day counts, but little service for the fellow man was done. This number will be improved come 2006.

9. Be a better person. 7. I think I have become a better person. Too tough a question, so this goal will probably not make it back come 2006.

10. Live life to the fullest, everyday. 3. Life is full of surprises. Everyday living one or encountering one is still in need of improvement. Another tough one to guage/assess accurately.

Tuesday Items

Would you rather:
live forever OR go back in time to when you were seven, knowing everything you know now?
Go back in time, knowing everything. I think a pretty good alternate universe would result rather than living in one forever.
be caught with your hand in a stranger's purse OR taking a picture of a stranger peeing?
Caught in a purse. Easier to explain away.
kiss a horse on the lips OR poke a dog in the butt? Kiss a horse. Mr. Ed is a loveable horse.
wake up in the county jail OR naked, on the train tracks? Wake up on the train tracks. Not sure I need a rap sheet and couldn't afford the bail anyways.
have a "get out of jail free" card OR "win second prize in a beauty contest" card? Get out jail free card. See above. Second place in still second place and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
have the power to give people paper cuts OR satisfy their hunger? Satsify their hunger. Nothing beats having a good cook around who knows a thing or two about good food.
eat a plate full of daisies OR four full hams in one sitting? Never know how daisies taste, but would pass on the excess hams for terrible tasting items.
get hit with a golf ball OR a football? Football. Golfballs can leave a deeper bruise. The football I think wouldn't hurt as much.

What does it take to "change" yourself, your situation, your future, or your family? Do realize the reality of the situation that you find yourself in? Have you researched and developed a personal finance plan? You must read, study, ask questions, and do whatever else it takes to understand your very own "personal" personal finances. Ignorance is not "bliss", it is "dangerous". Focused, intense study and thought lead to knowledge, which leads to change, which leads to growth. You cannot change what you do not know needs changing. Once you have knowledge, you have more than just "power". You have the ability re-align your priorities and literally shape your destiny. ou must put both to work through ACTION. Knowledge without application is USELESS. Don't draw up 50 plans, don't invent a dozen scenarios! Do your research, make a plan, and move forward. You can always "change" directions as you gather more and more desire and knowledge, but you will NEVER get anywhere by standing pat. Just as desire without knowledge leads to futility, knowledge without action leads to frustration. JUST DO IT!
