Overheard on the streets of Boston 6.15.7

Out on my lunch break the other day when the high temp didn't get above 55 in the middle of June, "Would you like to take some time to stop global warming?" as I pass most weaing scarves and jackets.

Radio commercial at work describing the down sides of taking a date out for dinner to the grocery store sample sections. Pretty good jokes and commentary. Good advice too.

Having known the Red Sox would lose to the Rockies since the guy who is 1-15 when he attends the games said he was out to catch the Sox game. Why bother?

Space shuttle launch 6.8.7

Pretty cool watching the space shuttle Atlantis lift off. Wish I was down in Florida watching it live. Maybe sometime in September when it returns. Hopefully they can schedule it on a weekend instead.

Thoughts for today 6.1.7

Since a severe thunderstorm has rolled into Boston and rain out the Yankees/Sox game, I'll post some thoughts for the day:

1. Quality The race for quality has no finish line.
2. Opportunity You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
3. Teamwork Teamwork is the ability to work toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.
4. Focus Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you fail to focus on your goals.
5. Determination The race is not always to the swift; but to those who keep on running.
6. Competition Whoever said it's not whether you win or lose that counts, probably lost.
7. Perseverance The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but a matter of will.
8. Success The harder you work ... the luckier you get.
9. Effort Some people dream of worthy accomplishments while others stay awake and do them.
10. Passion There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart ... pursue those.
11. Risk You can't reach your goals without occasionally taking some long shots.
12. Success Some people dream of success ... while others wake up and work hard at it.

Watch out when you stretch the truth - it could snap back at you.
Your life is in the hands of any fool who can make you lose your temper.
The easiest way to find time to do all the things you want to do is to turn off the TV set.
A secret of a long fruitful life is to forgive everybody each night before you go to bed.
A sure-fire formula for success - rise early - work late - strike oil.
An egotist is someone who talks about himself when you want to talk about yourself.
If the TV set and the refrigerator weren't so far apart we wouldn't get any exercise at all.
Adolescence is like a house on moving day - a temporary mess.
A rumor without a leg to stand on will get around some other way.
Living in the lap of luxury is pretty good except when luxury gets up.
Facts do not cease to exist simply because they are ignored.
The happy man can enjoy the scenery - even when he has to take a detour.
The trouble with doing nothing is that you can't stop to take a rest.
A bore is someone who talks when you want them to listen.
The early bird is a creature that catches the worm and is welcome to it.
You have reached middle age when weight lifting consists of just standing up.
If crime doesn't pay how come it is one of the biggest businesses in the world?
It will be an interesting world when everybody has assertiveness training.
Some people are like blisters - they don't show up until the work is done.
Footprints in the sands of time are never made sitting down.
Practice makes perfect - so be careful what you practice.
If it goes in one ear and out the mouth - it's gossip.

Don't name a pig you plan to eat.
Country fences need to be horse high, pig tight, and bull strong.
Life is not about how fast you run, or how high you climb, but how well you bounce.
Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
A bumblebee is faster than a John Deere tractor.
Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled.
Meanness doesn't happen overnight.
Forgive your enemies. It messes with their heads.
Don't sell your mule to buy a plow.
Don't corner something meaner than you.
It doesn't take a very big person to carry a grudge.
You can't unsay a cruel thing.
Every path has some puddles.
When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
The best sermons are lived, not preached.
Most of the stuff people worry about never happens.
Don't squat with your spurs on.
Don't judge people by their relatives.
Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

If you want to get the best out of a person, you must look for the best that is in him.
Expectations influence behavior. We create images of how things should be.
The self-image is the key to human behavior.
Know your goals; If you can't measure it you can't manage it.
You find what you look for in life.
Look for what you want; not for what you don't want. Accentuate the positive.
An ounce of loyalty is worth more than a pound of cleverness.
You cannot consistently perform in a manner which is inconsistent with the way you see yourself.
Three steps to a healthy self-image:
Make out your own victory list; Compare your actions to your ability
Determine to live until you are dead; Happy successful people grow throughout life.
Focus your attention on those you are responsible to and for; Be sincerely interested in others.
Persons with a high level of self-esteem feel productive.
The greatest enemy of excellence is good.
One learns people through the heart, not through the eyes or intellect.
People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care about them.
Science is organized knowledge.

If something can go wrong it will.
If someone can possibly misunderstand you they will.
There is never enough time to do something right but plenty of time to correct it when it gets screwed up.
We have no time for fire prevention but everybody can stop work to fight a major fire.
ASAP (as soon as possible) is an open invitation to delay anything for as long as you can.
Anything bad that can happen will happen at your most inopportune time to the most important customer at their most critical time to their most crucial shipment.
Anything that your company cannot do will be done well by your competitor who wants your customer.
A satisfied customer will tell 10 associates about you. A dissatisfied customer will tell 20 people about you. It isn't fair but it is true.
A company that can keep its customers will greatly prosper over those who lose customers. Customers who are satisfied and stay with you will quadruple your business over a short span of years.
It will take 10 new customers to replace a long time old customer in business volume.
